How do laser treatments work?

IPL and CO2 lasers work two different ways:

IPL lasers

IPL lasers use different wavelengths. Some wavelengths are absorbed by pigmented tissues like age spots and spider veins. Absorbing the energy makes the pigmented tissues break down and your body clears the residue away, causing them to disappear.

Other wavelengths penetrate deeper under the skin’s surface, where the energy activates collagen production. Extra collagen strengthens your skin, improving your complexion and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles fade away.

CO2 resurfacing

Your provider uses the laser’s energy to precisely remove one layer of skin at a time. They can control how many layers they remove, staying just at the surface or going deeper, based on your unique aesthetic needs.

With laser resurfacing, your provider can accurately pinpoint a specific problem, like a scar or age spot. Or they can treat your entire face. Your problem areas disappear along with the old layer of skin, giving you a rejuvenated appearance.

Like IPL lasers, the CO2 laser also heats cells below the surface. This boosts collagen production and adds strength and resilience to the new skin growing in.

What should I expect during and after my laser treatment?

Before your laser session, your provider cleans your skin, applies a topical anesthetic, and protects your eyes. After customizing the laser’s strength and wavelength to treat your concerns, they send the beam of laser light into your skin.

After an IPL session and resurfacing, your skin looks and feels like you have a mild sunburn. Your provider explains how to care for your skin and reminds you that it’s essential to avoid sunlight after laser treatments.

The time it takes to heal depends on the type of laser treatment and, if you have resurfacing, the number of skin layers removed.
