Did you know that an IPL (intense pulsed light) laser can be used as a treatment for leg veins & facial veins?

IPL laser vein treatments effectively treat facial veins and unwanted leg veins that are superficially residing in the epidermal area of the skin. IPL works very well in eliminating spider veins and telangiectasias by selective photocoagulation of the unwanted vein by targeting hemoglobin (oxy and de-oxy). The IPL light energy is selectively absorbed by hemoglobin but the real target is the blood vessel wall which is achieved by thermal transfer. Selectivity ensures that the thermal effect is limited to the vessel and the surrounding tissue structures are spared.

Intense-Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL) utilizes a light source to reduce their appearance and rejuvenate the skin. IPL directly treats spider veins by damaging the walls of the blood vessel by applying heat to it. Once the blood vessel is damaged, it will eventually disappear and be reabsorbed by the body. IPL is effective because it treats the lower layers of the skin. The light penetrates the skin affecting the spider veins without damaging the surface of the skin. Additionally, IPL is effective because it has the capability to treat both larger and smaller areas because the amount of heat from each wavelength can be manipulated.

When can IPL be used on spider veins?

The only situation surface laser could be used for spider veins is if they are completely isolated, on the face/torso, and in rare cases, on the legs, if there is a condition that is predominantly a spider vein condition ie: without deeper varicose veins feeding the spider veins. To be sure about this, an examination should be carried out by a dermatologist

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are like varicose veins, but smaller. Spider veins begin as tiny capillaries and appear as blue or red squiggles. They are small red, blue, or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves, and ankles. ⅓ of the adult female population is troubled with this common problem. They are associated with “feeder” veins and can also be associated with the larger underlying varicose veins. The medical term for spider veins is telangiectasia. These small veins are not harmful but often unsightly.

What to expect during your IPL treatment of facial or leg veins?

IPL for facial & leg veins treatment is a quick outpatient appointment that usually takes 10 to 20 minutes and normal activity can be resumed that day. The recovery time is short and you could even book it during a lunch break! The physician or technician will use a handheld device on the affected areas, you may be required to wear protective eye coverings or goggles.
