There are many options available for laser skin treatments to enhance the look and feel of the skin on your face. Laser resurfacing is a treatment that reduces facial wrinkles and skin irregularities. It may also help with certain acne scars. The laser machine directs short, concentrating pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. The procedure has been popularized in recent years and is also called lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Facial Laser Treatments?

Laser resurfacing and other facial laser treatments are great for removing fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes and mouth or on your forehead. Acne scars that are very shallow can be removed by a facial laser treatment and non-responsive skin after a facelift can be easily rejuvenated.

If you have acne or deep scars you may not be a candidate for facial laser treatments. Stretch marks and dark skin also cause complications and are not recommended for facial laser treatments.

How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

There are types of lasers that are commonly used in facial laser treatments to vaporize skin cells damaged at the surface level. Those are the carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium.

The C02 laser has been used for years to treat wrinkles, scars, warts, enlarged oil glands on the nose, and other conditions. The erbium laser was designed to remove surface-level and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face, hands, neck, or chest. The erbium laser targets these areas so a benefit compared to the CO2 is that the burning of surrounding tissue is minimal. It also works better for darker skin tone.

Medical Considerations

Facial laser treatments can be used to treat acne scarring but the active presence of acne can increase the risk for infection. If the patient currently has acne or other skin infections such as cold sores and herpes simplex, it can increase the risk for complications during the healing process. Your dermatologist will only be using a laser treatment to treat acne scars that are relatively shallow. Also, some prescription acne treatments have been linked to a decreased healing capacity in skin.
