The Orlando Dermatology Center is located in Florida, and during April-August we have some of the most humid and hot days of the year. This creates a host of problems for your skin. Humidity often breeds bacterial infections and can cause problems with your sweat glands, acne, infections, rashes, and other skin irritations. For patients who naturally have combination, oily, or acne-prone skin, additional humidity can be an absolute detriment to their overall skin health. You can combat these by learning how to properly maintain your skin with natural products and simple daily tasks.

Humidity & Skincare

When the weather is humid it means that there is a lot of moisture in the air. That causes the pores of the skin to open and makes them susceptible to gathering dirt, oil and allergens. Too much humidity can cause problems like acne, skin breakouts, eczema and allergic reactions that show up on the skin. Many people who live in humid climates often complain of a condition they call “tropical acne.” As you can imagine this is a problem that most often affects patients who live in areas that are close to the equator.

What to Do:

Incorporate acid: Dr. Blatnoy recommends using a cleanser with a light grade of alpha or beta hydroxy acids. These will gently exfoliate the skin and dissolve built-up oil in the pores.

Hydrate lighter: Use less dense oils for the skin. Water-based sunscreens, which absorb into the skin quickly and leave little residue on the skin, can also help avoid an overly oily face.

Hands off: Dr. Blatnoy reminds us to keep hands away from the face. In humid climates you already have sweat on the face, don’t add bacteria from your hands as well.

Keep Your Skin Exfoliated: Choose hydrating body washes and facial cleansers that also remove dead skin cells. This can help keep your skin looking fresh, smooth, and hydrated so that you look your best in your new spring and summer attire.

When to see a Dermatologist:

If you have a chronic skin condition, like acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, or another skin condition that makes finding effective summer skincare products difficult. Our dermatologists at Orlando Dermatology Center can help you.

If you’re experiencing a dramatic increase in acne on your face, back, or other parts of your body you may need a prescription grade topical product. See a dermatologist before the problem worsens.
