What are keloid scars?

Keloids and hypertrophic scars represent an exuberant healing response that poses a challenge for physicians. Patients at high risk of keloids are usually younger than 30 years and have darker skin. Sternal skin, shoulders and upper arms, earlobes, and cheeks are most susceptible to developing keloids and hypertrophic scars. High-risk trauma includes burns, ear piercing, and any factor that prolongs wound healing.

How do dermatologists diagnose keloids?

At the Orlando Dermatology Center, Dr. Vitaly Blatnoy can usually diagnose a keloid by examining it visually.

If it looks like you might have another condition, your dermatologist can perform a skin biopsy. This is a simple procedure that your dermatologist can perform during your office visit. You remain awake the entire time. To perform a skin biopsy, your dermatologist numbs the area and removes a small amount of skin so that it can be examined under a microscope.

Your dermatologist sends the removed skin to a medical lab, at the Orlando Dermatology Center, we have a medical lab in-house. The doctor who examines what your dermatologist removed will write a report. It tells your Orlando dermatologist what was seen under the microscope.

If you have a keloid, your dermatologist at the Orlando Dermatology Center can create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

How the Orlando Dermatology Center treats keloid scars:

Dr. Blatnoy takes advantage of the CryoDestruction Technique, which actually freezes the keloid from the inside out with liquid nitrogen. The freezing cold of liquid nitrogen causes a thermal effect that destroys cell growth, thus removing the keloid. With no risk of worsening the scar, and a 97% SUCCESS RATE, the CRYODESTRUCTION is the best method available! Best suited for keloid scar removal on ears. Other scars may be subject to using the SRT machine.

 forms of treatment:

  • Intralesional steroid injections in the keloid scar.
  • Cryotherapy (freezing).
  • Laser therapy.
  • Surgery (Note: Surgery to remove a keloid may be followed by other treatments to help keep the scar from coming back.)
