Orlando Dermatology Center

Florida's drier winter air can trigger dryness and breakouts, so Orlando Dermatology Center shares how to adjust your skincare routine—moisturizing, sun protection, and healthy habits—to keep skin clear and glowing while managing the four types of acne.

Getting acne treatments done at state-of-the-art clinics in Orlando, Florida offers many benefits, especially during Florida's winter months. Your skin may respond unpredictably to temperature fluctuations—cold weather can cause dryness and increased breakouts. Since skin forms the barrier between you and the environment, adjusting your skincare routine seasonally helps maintain youthful, glowing skin year-round.

Here's how Dr. Vitaly Blatnoy from Orlando Dermatology Center recommends you prepare:

Moisturize!

During summer, Florida's humidity reduces the need for heavy moisturizers. However, winter's drier air requires intentional moisture management. Those with oily skin should stick with light, water-based moisturizers that won't clog pores. For normal or dry skin types, winter calls for increased moisturizing efforts. Daytime routines may still use water-based products, but nighttime calls for oil-based formulations. Look for products containing:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Dimethicone
  • Glycerin
  • Mineral oil
  • Petrolatum

Apply lotion before bed to allow your skin to absorb full moisturizing benefits while sleeping.

The Winter Sun

Winter's shorter days and lower sun angle don't diminish sun damage risk. The winter sun can still damage your skin even in Florida's favorable climate. With an average of 231 sunny days yearly, Orlando residents must remain vigilant about sun exposure. Many moisturizers now include SPF for convenient dual protection. The center recommends at least SPF 15 for adequate UVA and UVB protection. SPF 15 blocks roughly 93% of harmful UVB rays while SPF 30 blocks approximately 97%.

Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle combined with consistent skincare and preventative treatments promotes radiant skin. Acne ranks among the most common conditions treated at the center. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the nation's most prevalent non-life-threatening skin condition, characterized by small red raised bumps or painful subsurface lumps on the face, chest, back, shoulders, and neck. Our dermatologists classify acne into four types:

  • Papules: Small, red, raised bumps resulting from inflamed pores or infected hair follicles
  • Pustules: Small red bumps with white pus-filled tips
  • Nodules: Large, red, painful lumps beneath the skin's surface
  • Cysts: The most severe form—painful, large pus-containing lumps underneath the skin
