New Year Skincare Recommendations from A Dermatologist (2019)

Start the new year with a healthier skincare routine: a dermatologist explains what happens during a yearly skin exam, how often to see a dermatologist, and the daily habits—like SPF moisturizer and exfoliating—that keep your skin protected in sunny Florida.

Happy New Year from everyone at the Orlando Dermatology Center & The Florida Keloid Center!

Are you looking to upgrade your skincare routine in 2019? We can help. Dermatologists recommend that you have a professional skin examination at least once a year. The beginning of January is the perfect time to start off right with your skin care routine.

What happens during a skin exam?

When you visit the Orlando Dermatology Center, Dr. Vitaly Blatnoy will thoroughly examine your skin and ask about your medical history. If you need laboratory tests, he will explain why you need them and approximately how long it usually takes to get results.

How often should I see a dermatologist?

You should visit your dermatologist at least once each year for a thorough skin examination. If you have issues between your yearly visit, including acne, suspicious areas that do not heal, a rash, or an infected nail, you should see your dermatologist immediately. Many skin conditions can be treated easily with a dermatologist's diagnosis and treatment.

By the time you're 30 you should have had a full body skin examination. This is essential!

What should be part of your daily skincare routine?

Dr. Vitaly Blatnoy recommends using a daily moisturizer with SPF 15-30 to protect your skin from the sun and keep your skin moisturized throughout the day. The biggest enemy to your skin, especially in sunny Florida, is the sun. Most moisturizers at your local market will include sunscreen. Remember to use sunscreen even during non-summer months as the sun's rays can always be harmful even when they are not as strong.

Using an exfoliant to clean your skin is also a good daily practice for your skincare regiment. AHAs and BHAs are popular and simply put: will unglue the surface cells that cause dullness and clog pores. Also, finding a quality makeup remover is essential as removing makeup nightly and allowing the skin to absorb the helpful ingredients in your other skincare products.
