As temperatures drop, winter can wreak havoc on your skin. At the Orlando Dermatology Center our patients are used to humid and hot climate but when temperatures drop and humidity goes down you will feel a big change in your skin. Dry skin is a common issue when cold dry air comes in.

Winter skin woes are common, with 83 percent of Americans saying their skin feels differently during the winter than it does the rest of the year, according to a recent survey conducted online among 2,000 U.S. adults by Harris Poll on behalf of CeraVe. More specifically, 77 percent say their skin feels dry in winter and 41 percent even describe it as itchy.

  • Half of Americans (50 percent) admit to taking more hot showers during the winter months, but only one-quarter (25 percent) realize that the hot showers they are taking can contribute to itchy skin.
  • While nearly one-third of Americans (31 percent) acknowledge that clothing material can contribute to itchiness, 19 percent won’t avoid specific clothing materials during the winter, despite the risk of itch.
  • Moreover, 57 percent admit to wearing wool, a material commonly described as itchy, during the winter.

5 Ways to Avoid Winter Dry Skin

To help reduce dry skin and itchy skin during the cold weather Dr. Blatnoy recommends:

  1. Avoid hot scalding showers, opt for lukewarm instead. Although a nice hot shower may feel great when it’s cold, it actually contributes to the problem of dry skin. Instead try a nice lukewarm shower.
  2. Increase moisturizer use. Using high quality moisturizer is a staple in any skincare routine but during the winter months it’s important to increase your use of moisturizers. A good quality facial oil such as Auki is a great way to combat dry skin as well. Check out their Black Seed Oil at www.aukibeauty.com.
  3. Use A Humidifier. Your heater in house is drying out the air and can cause problems. Installing a humidifier in your bedroom while you’re sleeping can help alleviate your dry skin.
  4. Dress Warmly. Covering your skin from the sting of the cold air is very effective. Keeping your largest organ out of the elements is a great strategy to reduce cold weather damage.
  5. HYDRATE! Drink plenty of water. Your body needs to increase H2O intake during the winter months. Warm tea is another great way to get hydrated while comforting yourself during the colder months.
